In Careful of Eights, Polybe + Seats combines three short plays, written by Gertrude Stein during World War II and performed by the children with whom Stein was living in France.   These are bookended with two versions of Stein's Lucretia Borgia, which was written in 1938 (and quite possibly never performed during Stein's lifetime). Lucretia Borgia weaves her way through the plays past murders without murderers, people becoming eggs, and battles over paper crowns.

Some of the plays were performed in development as part of the HERE American Living Room Festival and as part of the Dixon Place "Warning! Not for Broadway or the Met Either!" New Musical Theater Festival.   This process allowed Polybe + Seats to experiment with long-term development and performance in multiple venues.

This production was made possible in part by The Field.
